THE NEXT IDENTITY™ coaching method for transitioning humanitarians by Zoya Golovneva
You didn't lose a job. You lost the story you were living inside.
After years — sometimes decades — in a career that defined you, the transition out rarely feels like a step forward. It feels like a free fall. The title is gone. The mission is gone. The community is gone.

And suddenly the question you've never had to answer before shows up, quiet and insistent:
Who am I without all of this?

NEXT IDENTITY™ was built for that exact moment.
What is NEXT IDENTITY™ method?
A five-stage coaching method designed for humanitarians and international professionals navigating a fundamental career transition — not just a job change, but an identity shift. It was developed through my own experience of leaving a twelve-year career with UNHCR, and refined through work with 25 clients from nine countries, spanning the humanitarian, legal, diplomatic, and international development sectors.

It is not a CV rewrite. It is not a LinkedIn audit. It is the inner work that makes the outer work possible.
The method starts where most career programs skip: with grief. With the honest acknowledgment that something real is ending. Because the professionals I work with are not simply unemployed — they are mid-transition between two versions of themselves. And no amount of networking or strategy will move you forward until you've given yourself permission to let the old version go.

The Five Stages
R — RELEASE
Letting go
Before you can build what's next, you need to honour what's ending. This stage creates space to process the loss — of role, of mission, of belonging — without rushing past it. Because unprocessed grief doesn't disappear. It just shows up later, in sabotage.

A — AWARENESS
Seeing clearly
Most people know their job title. Very few know what that title was actually giving them beneath the surface. In this stage, we use the Anatomy of Mission™ — a proprietary tool that breaks your sense of purpose into eleven specific components — to map exactly what you've been drawing meaning from, and why generic career advice hasn't worked.

R — RESET
Rebuilding from values
This is where the real work begins. Instead of asking "what role should I take next," we ask: what do I stand for, independent of any organisation's logo? Through the Values DNA exercise and the Value Anchor tool, you identify the unchanging core that any next chapter must be built on.

R — RESOURCES
Translating your experience
Years in the humanitarian or international sector can feel impossible to explain to the outside world. This stage decodes your expertise into universally understood professional language — from "inter-agency coordination in conflict zones" to "leading multi-stakeholder coalitions without formal authority under extreme pressure." Your experience is not niche. It's rare. We make it legible.

N — NAVIGATION
Mapping what's next
With clarity on who you are and what you carry, we build three genuinely different scenarios for your next chapter — not three versions of the same thing. You test them through small, reversible experiments before committing to anything. And you walk out with a new professional narrative: a story that connects your past to your future in a way that makes sense to you, and to the world.
Who this is for
NEXT IDENTITY™ was designed for:
  • Humanitarians and International professionals who've spent years with the UN, INGOs, or multilateral agencies and are navigating a departure — voluntary or otherwise
  • Long-tenure specialists — lawyers, psychologists, HR professionals, consultants — who have built a deep identity around their field and find themselves at a crossroads
  • Expats and globally mobile professionals who have reinvented themselves geographically many times but have never been asked to reinvent themselves professionally
  • People who are externally successful but internally lost — who know exactly what their CV says but have forgotten what they actually want
If you have spent your career solving the world's problems, this is where you finally solve your own.

  • What makes this different
Most career coaching starts with the question: what do you want to do next?
That's the wrong question for the people I work with. After years of mission-driven work, "what do you want" can feel almost meaningless — because your wants have been so thoroughly fused with your role that separating them takes real work.

NEXT IDENTITY™ starts earlier, and goes deeper. It draws on narrative psychology, transition theory, values-based coaching, and cross-cultural identity research — and it is delivered in the language that you actually feel in. I work in English and Spanish, because the language in which you first experienced an emotion is the only language in which you can fully process it.

The method has been tested with 25 clients across 9 countries. 89% reported a significant reduction in uncertainty-related anxiety. 94% expanded their view of what was possible for them from one or two options to three to five. 83% described being able to tell a coherent story connecting their past and their future for the first time since the transition began.

  • About the methodology
NEXT IDENTITY™ was developed as part of my Master's research in Business Psychology and Coaching at Synergy Business School and refined in active practice from November 2025 onwards. Each client in the pilot cohort was recruited through a structured LinkedIn intake process and completed a screening conversation before beginning, ensuring the methodology was tested on the specific situation it was designed for.

The theoretical foundation draws on the work of William Bridges (Transitions, 2004), Herminia Ibarra (Working Identity, 2003), Dan McAdams on narrative identity, and Carol Dweck's research on growth mindset, among others. The Anatomy of Mission™ tool and the cross-sector competency dictionary ("From Humanitarian to Human") are original developments.
